Starting Your Reset Journey

2 September 2026 · 2 min read

A gentle, practical guide to your first five minutes of nervous system regulation — what a reset is, why it works, and how to begin today.

Most of us try to think our way out of stress. We make lists, we push harder, we promise to rest later. But when your nervous system is switched on, thinking is the last thing it wants to do. A reset works the other way round: settle the body first, and the mind follows.

What a reset actually is

A reset is a short, deliberate pause — five minutes — where you stop adding input and give your body a signal of safety. That signal comes through breath, posture, sound and attention. It is not meditation, and you do not need to clear your mind. You only need to stay for the full five minutes.

Why five minutes is enough

Your stress response is chemical as much as it is emotional. Once a surge of adrenaline and cortisol is no longer being topped up, it begins to clear. Slow exhalations engage the vagus nerve, which lowers heart rate and tells the brain the threat has passed. A few minutes of this, repeated often, lowers the background load you carry — what researchers call allostatic load.

Small resets, done often, beat long recoveries done rarely.

Your first session, step by step

  • Choose the word that fits right now — anxious, frozen, scattered, overwhelmed or doubting. Naming the state already softens it.
  • Sit somewhere you will not be interrupted. Feet flat, shoulders down, phone face down.
  • Follow the prompts as they appear. Each minute gives you one instruction — nothing to memorise.
  • Breathe out longer than you breathe in. That single ratio does most of the work.
  • Finish with the reflection. Rate your calm from one to five and write a line about what shifted.

What to expect afterwards

You may feel lighter, sleepy, or simply less loud on the inside. Occasionally you will feel more, not less — that is old tension surfacing, and it passes. What matters is not how any single session feels but the pattern you build.

Building the habit

Attach your reset to something you already do: after your first coffee, before you open your laptop, or as the last thing before bed. Turn on the daily reminder and let the streak tracker carry the motivation for you. Seven days is enough to notice a difference; thirty days is enough to change your baseline.

Begin today

Do not wait for a calm moment to practise being calm. Open the app, pick the word that fits, and give yourself five minutes. That is the whole journey — one reset at a time.
